Established in 2008, the Community Safety Initiative (CSI) aimed to improve safety within the home, school and wider community environment in Tallaght West, Co. Dublin. Initiatives were implemented in targeted areas to raise community spirit and belonging locally, build strong relationships and trust between residents and service providers, and establish a shared sense of responsibility amongst residents and service providers in relation to improving safety. This study evaluated the implementation of the initiative by the Childhood Development Initiative between 2008 and 2011.<br> Quantitative data formed one part of the evidence for this evaluation. A total of three semi-structured questionnaire surveys were conducted in three CSI pilot sites (sample = 600 houses) in Tallaght West during December 2010, January 2011 and again in June 2011. The surveys gathered the opinions and views from a total of 291 community residents concerning the impact of the CSI in terms of safety / service awareness, improved safety, pro-social behaviour and engagement in maintaining a safe community, and improvements to the physical environment locally.

Two surveys were conducted in defined sites in the Jobstown and Bookfield / Fettercairn areas of Tallaght West in December 2010 / January 2011 and again in June 2011.<br> Both survey sites comprised approximately 100 dwellings each and each house was called to during the door-to-door surveys (sample = 400 houses). Respondents were required to be over 18 years of age and researchers collected multiple surveys from houses (where possible) e.g. if more than one adult was willing to participate. In the return survey in June 2011, researchers called at each house in the survey site regardless of whether or not a completed survey (or surveys) had been collected at that house in the earlier December 2010 / January 2011 survey. Researchers collected surveys both from residents who had completed the December / January survey and those who did not. No distinction was made between those who completed one or both surveys.<br> The third CSI survey site was conducted on the MacUilliam estate in Tallaght West which in 2011 housed approximately 300 families. Using purposive quota sample 200 randomly selected houses, a door-to-door survey yielded 75 respondents (sample = 200 houses). As in the first two CSI Surveys, respondents were required to be over 18 years of age and researchers collected multiple surveys from houses (where possible) e.g. if more than one adult was willing to participate.<concept/></sampProc>
