V začetku študijskega leta 1981/82, s katero so želeli osvetliti predvsem socialno-ekonomski položaj svojih študentov, so jo izvedli kar ob vpisu novih študentov na Ekonomsko fakulteto. Pri tem so izhajali iz predpostavke, da je v zaostrenih gospodarskih razmerah prihajalo do ogroženosti študentov. Saj so dohodki študentov ustrezali le za sprotno "iz roke v usta" preživljanje. Ker pa je študent ekonomsko odvisen od svojih staršev, ker živi v tujem kraju in se mora prehranjevati drugje, je bilo treba upoštevati, da so zato študentove (z)možnosti za varčevanje zelo majhne. Spodbudni zgled je naslednje leto posnela tudi naša fakulteta (FSPN), saj nam ni bilo vseeno v kakšnih razmerah živijo in delajo naši študentje. Narejen je bil večji sociološki poudarek na celotni raziskavi in sicer je bil v ospredje postavljen predvsem problem družbene neenakosti. Po drugi strani pa so nas zanimale materialne razmere študentov in faktorji povezani s študijskim uspehom, ki vplivata na splošno študijsko uspešnost. Osnovni problem je potemtakem, kako družbena neenakost vpliva na pridobivanje visokošolske izobrazbe, kar je hkrati proces obnavljanja neenakosti. S praktičnega vidika pa nas je zanimalo tudi preprečevanje obnavljanja neenakosti, pri čemer imajo pomembno vlogo zlasti štipendije. Raziskava pa je bila izvedena še tako, da so bili podatki primerljivi s podatki Ekonomske fakultete Borisa Kidriča.The analysis of problem of student's social inequality originates from Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana. In the beginning of the academic year 1981/82 first survey was carried out with aims to enlighten the socioeconomic conditions of students at the marticulation. Temporary strained economic affairs threatened the student's conditions for normal studying. Low incomes were satisfying only short period of normal living and the rest were up to the students to find financial aid somewhere else. Faculty for sociology, politology and journalism (FSPN) adopted the same method to measure the financial condition of FSPN students. The purpose of this research was to stress the sociological importance of social inequality. On the other side, the research team paid a great deal of attention to measure the material conditions of the students and to find out the main factors that are related to the successful studying results. The main problem was to find out how does the social inequality affect the process of acquiring faculty education. The practical output was how to prevent the renewal of inequality among the students.
